Instructor insight

The Katana was Diamond's breakthrough trainer and remains popular for its excellent handling and visibility. The aircraft has very docile stall characteristics and is approved for basic aerobatics. Stick control gives excellent feedback and the bubble canopy provides superb situational awareness.

Student experience

The canopy can be very hot in summer requiring careful planning. With heavier pilots, useful load is limited. The Rotax engine requires specific operating knowledge. Some UK schools have moved to newer Diamond models.
