Airline sponsorships and loans are the best-known ways to fund pilot training. This article describes other ways to reduce the cost or add funding. They are smaller scholarships, modular training, military pathways, employer sponsorship, crowdfunding and part-time work. Published 5 January 2025. Check each amount and condition with the organisation before you apply.
Smaller Scholarships and Bursaries Smaller scholarships can add up. The Air League offers multiple bursaries ranging from £500 to £16,000 annually, covering various stages of pilot training from PPL to CPL.
The Royal Aero Club Trust provides specialized bursaries, with 47 annual awards of £500-£1,000 each. The British Women Pilots Association offers £500-£5,000 scholarships specifically for women pursuing aviation careers.
Strategy: Apply to multiple smaller scholarships simultaneously. Even winning 3-4 awards of £1,000-£2,000 each can cover significant training costs like theory exam fees, medical certificates, and initial PPL training hours.
Modular Training Approach Integrated training is one intensive course. In modular training, you complete each licence in a separate stage. You can work between modules to pay for the next stage.
Benefits: Spread costs over 3-5 years rather than requiring full funding upfront. Work between modules to save for next stage, reducing total loan requirements. Gain aviation industry experience (ground crew, flight operations) that strengthens future applications.
Considerations: Takes longer to reach commercial pilot status (typically 3-4 years vs. 18 months integrated). Requires strong self-discipline and consistent saving habits. Some airlines prefer integrated training graduates, though this is changing.
Military Pathways The RAF, Army Air Corps, and Royal Navy offer funded pilot training in return for a service commitment. After initial service commitments (typically 12-18 years), many military pilots transition to commercial aviation with zero training debt and valuable experience.
RAF Fast Jet Pipeline: Most comprehensive training available, though highly competitive (acceptance rate under 5%). Includes advanced jet training worth over £4 million commercial equivalent.
Army Pilot Training: Focus on helicopters and light aircraft, ideal for those interested in helicopter commercial operations. Shorter training pipeline than RAF but still comprehensive.
Employer Sponsorship (Non-Aviation) Some pilots secure partial sponsorship from non-aviation employers who value commercial aviation skills. Business aviation departments, corporate flight operations, or aviation consultancies occasionally fund training for employees who commit to working for them post-qualification.
How to Approach: Target companies with existing aviation operations or those expanding into business aviation. Propose a structured agreement with service commitment (typically 3-5 years). Highlight return on investment - trained pilots often stay with sponsoring employers longer term.
Community Crowdfunding Some UK trainees have used crowdfunding platforms to raise part of their training costs. A clear goal and regular progress updates can help.
Keys to Success: Professional campaign presentation with clear goals and milestones. Regular updates showing training progress to maintain donor engagement. Offering rewards or recognition (not financial returns). Strong existing social media presence before launching campaign.
Part-Time Work During Training Many flight schools now offer flexible scheduling allowing students to work part-time during training. Common jobs include flight school administration, ground crew operations, aircraft cleaning and servicing, and aviation retail or customer service roles.
Strategic Benefits: Reduces loan requirements by earning while learning. Builds aviation industry network that helps with post-training employment. Demonstrates work ethic to future employers. Some flight schools offer training discounts to staff.
Creating Your Funding Mix You can combine several of these routes. For example, use small scholarships for the first PPL costs. Work part time during the PPL phase. Apply for a larger sponsorship or loan for the CPL and ATPL phase. Use the modular route if an integrated sponsorship is unsuccessful.
